Changemakers

Thank you for your interest in helping promote the One Away campaign at the community level! We are working to reach all older adults who are struggling to make ends meet and you can help make sure we’re giving a voice to as many people as possible.

Here are five things you can do to spread the word and help make life better for all seniors.

  1. Connect with your Local Advocacy Partner and support their efforts.
One Away's state-level efforts are led by Local Advocacy Partners, 14 leading aging organizations working on elder economic security and collaborating with One Away. These advocates are capturing video stories of older adults in their communities, coordinating broad outreach to their own networks, and providing a powerful local voice to NCOA’s national campaign.

Here’s what to do: Click here to find out if there’s a Local Advocacy Partner in your state.

  2. Add a One Away button or video to your website or blog.
Featuring One Away on your (or your organization's) website or blog is a great way to spread the word!

    Here's what to do:

    • Click here to see our six One Away buttons. You or your web manager can add any of these buttons to your website or blog by simply copying and pasting the code!
    • You or your web manager can also embed our newest One Away video in your website or blog by following these instructions.
  3. Hand out postcards at your local senior center.
We created One Away postcards so that older adults who can’t get online can write a story of struggle and mail it to us to be part of this campaign.

Here’s what to do: Click here to order postcards that will be mailed to you.  Then, bring them to your community organization, pass them out to older adults, and help them write their stories.  We suggest you collect them right then and drop them in your nearest mailbox so they make it back to us.  If you need help finding a local senior center in your area, please contact us here.

  4. Organize an event to watch a video and talk about One Away.
Events are excellent opportunities to have a conversation about how older adults are struggling to make ends meet and what needs to be done about it.

Here’s what to do: Pick a time and place to get together with people to raise awareness about the problem and discuss the solutions that already exist in your area.  Invite your neighbors, friends and family to watch the One Away video, read stories of older adults from your state and talk about their own experiences.  You can hand out postcards here too! Click here to download an organizing guide that includes fast facts about economic insecurity and discussion questions and click here (right click, then select "Save As...") to download your own copy of the video.

  5. Blog about your experiences at the local level.
We know that a story of struggle might only be part of your experience with struggling older adults, especially if you’re actively organizing in your community on this issue.

Here’s what to do: Write a note to us about the work you’re doing, what you see working or not working, and how you feel about this effort and we’ll make you an official guest blogger for the One Away campaign.
