  • “Bad and Getting Worse, Grim and Getting Grimmer”

“Bad and getting worse, grim and getting grimmer.” These comments made by a prominent national figure at an aging conference I recently attended have been haunting me since I first heard them. The speaker was talking about the political atmosphere in Washington, D.C. and about the future of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

As Congress addresses the deficit, debt ceiling, and budget, they must not lose sight of the older persons in their jurisdictions, who are hanging on to the lifeline made possible through Older Americans Act (OAA) programs. Any action that weakens the OAA serves to fray this lifeline for those living one event away from disaster.

Stories Of Struggle

  • I am having a hard time just living on social security. Hope you do not take any of this away. My health insurance has asked for a raise. I am having $313.00 taken out of my Social Security check now. When you take that away from $900.00 you don’t have much to pay for the rent. Food, Rent, etc + Medicare. I am 83 years old. Leave me alone. Hida East New Market, MD
  • Homeless for a year plus living in cars. Elaine Crisfield, MD
  • My mother-in-law, right side paralyzed from a stroke, spent her and her husband's retirement monies on his care until he died of Louis Bodies Disease. She is now still paying off her house and in debt due to her medical needs. Even if she wanted to, which she does not, she cannot afford to go to a retirement complex. There needs to be another way. BettyAnn Ellicott City, MD
  • Some of the seniors I know live on Medicare alone, which isn't enough for anyone. Since the economy became bad in 2008, they have had to focus on survival, and they have a poor quality of life. Molly Kensington, MD
