Vermont Associates Brings One Away to New England

Vermont Associates for Training and Development, Inc. is proud to partner with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) on the One Away Campaign for Elder Economic Security.

Through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Vermont Associates provides training and employment services for Vermonters age 55+, helping them develop personally and professionally as they aim to find new jobs, or keep existing jobs. As Vermont's only resource for mature worker specific services, Vermont Associates has an almost three-decade history of advocating for older adults in their search for employment, which is perhaps the issue most central to economic security.

Vermont Associates takes a holistic approach to helping mature workers by providing workplace experience training that is skill-specific, promoting the development of individuals’ employment portfolios and job search skills, as well as providing the opportunity for them to gain recent job references, and referrals to wrap-around services that meet their unique needs. These wrap-around services endeavor to address the varied, multiple needs of individuals for whom one social service is insufficient. Such wrap-around services might include fuel assistance, mental health counseling, financial planning assistance, and general wellness programs, among many others.

Vermont Associates’ SCSEP program enrolls many participants that are literally “one away” from a disaster, whether it be one paycheck, one health issue, or one lost family member.  Over the course of their training, program participants become more secure and confident, regain their financial footing, and once again become successful in the workplace, and in life.

In the last 12 months, Vermont Associates has helped over 75 mature, previously unemployed people gain unsubsidized employment.  Serving over 400 people annually, Vermont Associates brings to One Away a wealth of compelling individual stories and perspectives on elder economic issues, and details on how social services and nonprofits can cooperate to provide the best possible outcomes for older people.

  • I'm one away. I make just enough so I don't qualify for no help. But things are so hard. Thank God for you and this program, cuz I don't know what I'd do. I need it, VT needs it. Thank you! Shelly Burlington, VT
  • I'm so glad to see that organizations like this exist to help senior citizens. There are so many who struggle these days and it's encouraging to find people dedicated to making their lives better. I am fully behind your efforts and would be happy to help in any way I can. Kimberly New York, NY
  • What an important program for Vermont seniors and the Vermont economy! When will businesses realize the value of older workers? We have a great work ethic and are willing to learn new skills. Don't forget - we all have one thing in common...we are all aging! Carol Georgia, VT
